Advice & Information

Welfare Benefits and Housing Advice

We provide advice and support on all UK based welfare benefits provided by local authorities in London, the Department for Work and Pensions and the Pension Service.

We provide advice and support on homelessness assistance, housing register applications, risk of homelessness in rented accommodation and on living in poor housing conditions.

All the support we provide is provided through booked appointments.

Please email us at [email protected] or call us on 020 7916 2222 (option 1 twice) to ask for an appointment.

Accessing Hardship Grants

We have two types of hardship grants available for those who are struggling or in crisis.

These grants can be used to cover living costs; including interim accommodation costs, clothing and food; the costs of official documentation or medical reports; and for practical support to repatriate to Ireland in an emergency situation.

For full details on The Benevolent Society of St. Patrick grant and the Irish Youth Foundation grant are available on our dedicated Hardship Grants webpage.

Citizenship and Identity Service

We provide a free of charge  application,  renewal  and witness–only  appointment service for Irish passports here at the London Irish Centre. This service is aimed at supporting those who need additional help in processing and accessing their Irish identity documents.

To find out more about this service, please visit our dedicated Citizenship and Identity webpage.

Practical Support

We have a Support Officer who can assist with reading documents, referrals into services and support completing basic forms or applications. This can include applications for grants, blue badges and taxi cards.

What to do if you are at immediate risk

If you are in urgent need of help because you are currently or at risk of homelessness please contact a council for assistance. You can use this Gov.uk link to find the correct contact details. You can also report rough sleeping to Street Link UK and ask for local assistance on the street.

For emergency medical treatment, you do not need to register in the UK. It is provided free at the point of use and you can call 999 for an ambulance or drop into an A&E department.

You do need to register with a local GP for general medical support. Ongoing healthcare in the UK is free for people born in Ireland due to the Common Travel Area. For information about our Health Navigation service, please visit our dedicated webpage.

There are not many places like [the London Irish Centre] in the city where people feel isolated and alone. It can be a lifeline, it was in my case anyway. From the moment I stepped in the centre, you gave me so much compassion and maximised what you could offer me, and I knew I wasn’t alone. You gave me hope. I feel like it’s now my home away from home and I genuinely call it that.
