London Irish Book Club Special: Donal Ryan

Virtual - Lectures hosted on Zoom

01/06/2023 7:00pm

Our London Irish Bookclub regulars invite you to join them in welcoming Donal Ryan to the LIC virtual stage as he speaks with Greg O'Donoghue about his latest book.
Heralded as a 'fierce tale of prejudice and patriarchy' (Joanna Cannon, The Guardian), Ryan's most recent work is a beautifully rendered work following four generations of women in County Tipperary.
Their story begins at an end and ends at a beginning. It involves wives and widows, gunrunners and gougers, sinners, and saints. It's a story of terrible betrayals and fierce loyalties, of isolation and togetherness, of transgression, forgiveness, desire, and love. Of all the things a family can be and all the things it sometimes isn't.The Queen of Dirt Island is an uplifting celebration of fierce, loyal love and the powerful stories that bind generations together.

'While Donal Ryan is never afraid of "all the meanness and sorrow of the world," he also manages to excavate the thrilling beauties that hold us together. He manages, with wit and grace, to illuminate the anonymous corners of human experience and get at the underworld of our souls.'

Our London Irish Bookclub is a fun and informal online Book Club that brings together a multigenerational group of book lovers to chat and discuss the preselected books each month. There is no obligation to attend every Club or to buy every book. The meetings are hosted by Greg who works his way around the room and invites participants to give their thoughts. Sessions are light-hearted and inclusive.
